What Is a Slot Receiver?

In the game of football, a slot receiver is a receiver who lines up in an outside position on passing downs. While this position is not considered a wide receiver, it does carry significant responsibilities and can be one of the more challenging positions on a team to play. In order to succeed, a slot receiver must be able to run routes that match up with the other receivers on a team and must also be a good blocker. Additionally, he or she must be fast to beat coverage and get open for passes. A great slot receiver is also very agile and can use his or her speed to avoid tackles.

While a slot player may not be the most important or valuable member of a team, they are an integral part of any successful offense. The slot receiver is usually the third string receiver and is primarily used to catch passes, but also plays on running downs and can be a key factor in a running play.
